Harry Potter
We are introduced to Harry Potter in the first book in the magical series by J.K. Rowling.
Harry, an orphan, lives with his Uncle Vernon Dursley, his wife Petunia and his cousin, Dudley. The Dursleys are what is known as “muggles”, a word meaning non-magical humans. Although they have money, they force Harry to live under the stairs in a tiny closet room and treat him cruelly. Harry knows little about his past before coming to live with the Dursleys, but magical events always seem to happen around Harry, and the Dursleys hate anything magical. Harry's 11th birthday is full of the strange happenings the Dursleys hate, ending with a climactic visit from a giant named Rubeus Hagrid- who tells Harry he is a wizard born of magical parents and has been accepted as a student at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry also learns that his parents were murdered by a powerful, evil sorceror named Lord Voldemort. The scar on Harry's forehead is the mark of Voldemort's failed attempt to kill Harry at the same time, costing Voldemort his powers and making Harry Potter famous in the world of wizardry.
Harry Potter and Hagrid go to London on a shopping trip for Harry's magical Potter Stuff and Harry enters Hogwarts as a first year student. He develops lasting friendships with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger during his first year as a student, and together with Hagrid the three friends uncover a plot to steal the Sorcerer's Stone, a magical talisman that grants riches and eternal life to the holder. They suspect the potions master, Severus Snape, because of his hostility toward Harry, his role in letting a deadly mountain troll into the school and his attempt to bewitch Harry's broomstick during a game of Quidditch. The stone is guarded by a huge three-headed dog and the three must get past Fluffy and several other magical obstacles to find the truth. The final chapter reveals the thief, crowns the hero, and demystifies all the “Potter Stuff” happening during Harry's first year at Hogwarts.
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
The second book in the magical series by J.K. Rowling. We find Harry Potter spending the summer on Privet Street with his muggle relatives, impatient to get back to Hogwarts. The Dursleys are as cruel as ever- and all of Harry's “Potter Stuff” is kept under lock and key. A surprise visit from a house elf named Dobby warning Harry not to go back to Hogwarts lands Harry in even more trouble. Dobby can't convince Harry to give up going back to school. He causes an uproar at the Dursley home and gets Harry locked in his room, but Ron Weasley and his brothers break Harry out of his bedroom prison in a flying car and take him off just in time. Harry's second year at Hogwarts begins badly, and things get worse when his fellow students learn of Harry's ability to talk to snakes- a fearful trait. Soon Harry starts hearing a threatening voice in the castle walls and finds an enchanted diary which offers help. Then the caretaker's cat turns up petrified- with a warning that the Chamber of Secrets has been opened by the Heir to Slytherin, and no one in the castle is safe. The other Hogwarts students suspect Harry Potter himself is the unknown danger to be feared and avoided. Harry and his friends must discover who the Heir to Slytherin is and stop him, before someone is killed!
Student after student becomes petrified until finally one of the victims is Harry's good friend, Hermione Granger, and he knows he must act. When the headmaster, Albus Dumbledore, and the gameskeeper, Rubeus Hagrid, are removed from the school Harry and Ron take matters into their own hands and piece the clues together to find the hidden Chamber's entrance. Ron's sister, Ginny, disappears and Hogwarts is to be closed forever. The final chapter is one chilling discovery after another as Harry Potter faces down evil once again, and makes a friend for life- ending his second year at Hogwarts School.
Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban
The third book in the magical series by J.K. Rowling. We find Harry Potter enduring yet another abusive summer with his muggle relatives. As the summer break comes to an end, Harry's Uncle Vernon invites his sister for a visit. Her viciousness toward Harry finally snaps his self-control and he accidentally inflates her like a balloon and sends her sailing. Harry knows he must leave the Dursleys before he is thrown out, so he gathers together all of his “Potter Stuff” and catches an enchanted bus to London- but not before he sees a strange black dog in the bushes, staring at him. Harry takes a room at the Leaky Cauldron and waits for his friends and the beginning of his third year at Hogwarts. While a guest at the pub, Harry overhears the disturbing news that a crazed prisoner from the Azkaban prison, Sirious Black, has escaped and is after Harry Potter himself! Rejoining his friends, Harry has a terrifying encounter with a Dementor guard from Azkaban prison on the train. At Hogwarts things are no better- Black is sighted close to the school and in Divination class, Harry gets “The Grim” in his tea leaves. Professor Trelawney believes his death is imminent, and Harry's activities are strictly monitored for his safety. Hagrid is now a Professor, but on the first day in his class one of Hagrid's magical creatures, a flying hippogriff, injures Draco Malfoy and Hagrid's job and his beloved creature's life are on the line. As Christmas arrives, a mysterious gift arrives for Harry- a racing broom! The broom is confiscated- will Harry get to use it to win the Inter-House Quidditch Cup? Now Sirius Black is inside the castle, slashing bed curtains and terrorizing the entire school. Harry's friends are allowed into the magical village for a little revelry and Harry is forced to stay behind- or is he? As the school year comes to an end, Harry and his friends must save the hippogriff, catch a killer and defeat the Dementors. The final chapter is full of danger and surprises as Harry Potter makes some amazing discoveries about himself, his father and the real truth behind the betrayal.
Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire
The fourth book in the magical series by J.K.Rowling. We find Harry Potter waking from a dream that Voldemort, the evil sorceror who killed his parents, is after him once again. The muggle relatives Harry lives with have never treated him kindly, but since Harry's Godfather is a convicted murderer (although innocent of the crime) they are not as malicious as previously. Harry is allowed to accompany the Weasleys on a trip to see the Quidditch World Cup and finish his summer break at their home. After the game, Harry and the Weasleys are awakened in the middle of the night to find The Death Eaters (Voldemorts followers) attacking anyone with muggle blood, so they flee to keep Hermione safe- her parents are muggles. Somehow Harry loses his wand and someone uses it to conjure up a Voldemort threat- his Dark Mark in the air.
Harry Potter's fourth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry begins with the announcement that instead of the Inter-House Quidditch Cup, Hogwarts will be hosting the TriWizard Tournament. Each of the Witchcraft and Wizardry Academies will choose their champions with the only restriction for entry that the student must be at least 17 years old. The Goblet of Fire chooses the champions from Hogwarts and somehow, Harry Potter's name is one of those chosen! Harry didn't volunteer, but he takes the challenge- against his friends' wishes.
The TriWizard Tournament takes place in a huge enchanted maze, but is it even possible to make it to the center? The final chapter reveals the horrible secrets of the maze, the real prize lurking at the center and who has enough powers to make it out alive.
Harry Potter and The Order of The Phoenix
The fifth book in the magical series by J.K. Rowling. We find Harry Potter hiding under his Aunt and Uncles window, listening to the news on the radio. He is trying to hear whether or not Voldemort is causing trouble when he hears a crash and is discovered. He escapes to a park where he meets his muggle cousin, Dudley. Suddenly he feels the familiar presence of the Azkaban prison guards, the Dementors, and out of necessity he calls forth a Petronus stag to protect himself and Dudley from their attack. When they get back to the Dursleys house and he is explaining what happened, Harry gets a letter from Hogwarts telling him he is to be expelled for using magic outside of school. He learns that his Aunt and Uncle have surprising involvement and knowledge of magic he was not aware of. Harry and his “Potter Stuff” are removed from his Aunt and Uncle's home and taken to Sirius Black's house in London for safety. He learns about Black's family history- his family were Death Eaters who disowned Black because he refused to follow Voldemort. Even Sirius' house elf, Kreacher, dislikes him. His friends' intervention gives Harry Potter the chance to prove the necessity of his use of magic before the Minister of Magic makes his final decision to expel Harry from Hogwarts. At the hearing, Albus Dumbledore and Mrs. Figg testify on Harry's behalf and Harry is found innocent of reckless magic and allowed to go back to school. In the process, he discovers Voldemort is working to get back into power again, but noone seems to believe him. Harry learns there is a secret society bent on his protection but is kept in the dark about many things he doesn't understand.
Harry's fifth year at Hogwarts is difficult, with newspaper slander directed at himself and the Headmaster, Dumbledore. Hagrid is mysteriously absent and Hogwarts seems almost a hostile environment this year for Harry. His best friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger (and his arch-rival Draco Malfoy) receive promotions to prefect while Harry Potter is passed over for this honor. Professor Umbridge, the new Dark Arts Professor, refuses to teach the students anything useful. Harry is plagued with nightmares and becomes convinced he is possessed by Voldemort and must leave the school. His friends convince him to stay, but then Sirius Black goes missing and Harry must find him. Dumbledore and Hagrid are chased from the school as Headmaster and gameskeeper before Harry leads his friends to the Ministry of Magic, where the Death Eaters await. The final chapter will reveal who fulfills the prophesy, who lives, who dies and unveil the mysteries of Harry Potters greatest strengths and the future of Hogwarts School.
